As Uganda joins the rest of the world to commemorate world Breastfeeding Week in the first week of August, Breastfeeding mothers have been tipped to give their children enough breast milk, which contains Vitamins, proteins, and fats which are essential for child growth.
The appeal was made by Dr Eliab Tayebwa, the Assistant District Health Officer, Bushenyi, while at Ishaka Adventist Teaching Hospital, as the District joins the rest of the world to commemorate World Breastfeeding Week today.
He said this breastfeeding week provides the opportunity and platform to recognize and promote breastfeeding as a powerful foundation for lifelong health, development, and equity, and a critical investment in the future.
Nacy Nyamweya, the district Nutrition focal person, said that breastfeeding provides nutritional, mental, and emotional benefits to both infant and mother. She said that in Bushenyi district, 30% of young infants are malnourished due to improper breastfeeding values.
Speaking to the press, Dr Kule Issiah, the in-charge of Ishaka Adventist Teaching Hospital, said the Uganda report of 2025 indicates exclusive breastfeeding rates in children0-6 months at 94%, while 96% of children were reported to have ever breastfed.
