Buhweju District leaders have called for calm and collective action following an inspection tour by Local Government Minister Hon. Balaam Barugahara, which exposed a number of challenges affecting service delivery in the district yesterday 07/08/2026.
The district leadership, led by LC5 Chairperson Deo Atuhaire, came under scrutiny following allegations contained in a report presented during the minister’s inspection.
The allegations include interference in the recruitment of government staff, commercialisation of recruitment exercises, solicitation of money from contractors, threats against contractors who allegedly failed to meet demands, and alleged involvement in the supply of tea seedlings.
Responding to the inspection, Atuhaire acknowledged that the exercise had brought several issues to light that require attention.
However, he cautioned residents against using the findings to promote hatred or make false claims, stressing that authorities consider various factors when making appointments and promotions.
Buhweju Woman Member of Parliament Annet Byamukama condemned what she described as the mistreatment of workers in the district, warning that such practices can affect staff morale, encourage self-neglect and ultimately undermine service delivery.
Buhweju West MP John Bosco Kariisa urged residents to embrace technology and responsible leadership, saying Uganda’s ambition of building a $500 billion economy by 2040 can only be achieved through greater investment in technological advancement.
Kariisa also encouraged residents to elect capable leaders and move away from political blame games that, he said, hinder development.
Buhweju District NRM Chairperson Godfrey Kabandize commended Minister Barugahara for conducting the inspection, saying it had exposed challenges that he believes have slowed the district’s development while benefiting a few individuals.
Kabandize called on residents, civil servants, political leaders and other stakeholders to work together to improve service delivery and uphold the law.
Minister Barugahara pledged to return to Buhweju and engage with residents again as investigations into the allegations continue.
The inspection was conducted under the minister’s nationwide “Expose the Corrupt” campaign, aimed at strengthening accountability and combating corruption in local governments.
